This pony was diagnosed with ‘road founder’, which is just laminitis caused by too much concussion stress from overwork or hard footing.

I’m not sure how that happened given this little pony’s lifestyle, environment and temperament, but we treated her for road founder and she enjoyed a full recovery.

You can see the hoof distortion here and how we placed the shoe to compensate.

The full metal plate is for protection of the sole and the impression material is used to support and cushion the sole. Also, it is glued on instead of nailed on to avoid concussion which she wouldn’t have been happy with.

You can see how everything tightened up nicely over time.

What is ‘road founder’ as opposed other forms of founder?

@tommy86, I took it as a diagnosis of cause as much as anything. The laminae was still plenty inflamed and somewhat compromised as seen on the bottom set of pics (barefoot). In this case ‘road founder’ was meant to mean this pony had too much activity somehow on footing that was too hard or rough. I would argue that couldn’t be possible in this case, except treating the hoof for the concussion and solar inflammation seemed to be very successful.

The term founder here is not accurate either as the coffin bone did not sink, but I think was used in the generic sense because it’s easier to say.

      I hope that’s a reasonable answer.
